Letry robotics kits

The LETry range of mechatronics kits was developed by Chiping Tsao and colleagues at the Department of Mechatronic Technology,Tungnan University in Taiwan, in conjunction with school technology teachers. It has been widely tested in the Far East and has proven to be an extremely effective mechatronics teaching aid. It is ideally suited to teaching STEM courses in UK and European schools.

The kits were designed with the following objectives

  • Aimed at students in the age range from about 10 upwards
  • Affordability - the most expensive and advanced kits cost under £100
  • Graduated levels of difficulty - starting with simpler kits and lessons and progressing to more advanced kits and lessons
  • Suitable as a starting for more advanced projects
  • Kits come in a strong plastic carrying box - ideal for classroom use and making for easy storage.

Currently there are four kits available.
All are based around a small toy car that supports two small format breadboards, and has a battery compartment. Two DC motors drive the back wheels.

These robot cars are very well suited to building interactive Arduino based robotics projects.
The Arduino Nano board is very well suited to this breadboarding environment. Also one of the breadboard carriers can be replaced with a plain carrier onto which an Arduino Duemilanove board can be attached, thus opening up a whole range of possible projects that make use of the wide variety of available Arduino shields.

More advanced variants of these kits are available on demand. These include

  • C001 : Contains all the components of B002 as well as a Microchip PICKit2 programmer and a PIC 16 assembly language programming book using Microchip’s MPLAB IDE (Integrated Development Environment)
  • C002 : Contains all the components of B002 , but with the PIC16 microcontroller replaced with a PIC18 microcontroller, as well as a Microchip PICKit2 programmer and a PIC 18 assembly language programming book using Microchip’s MPLAB IDE (Integrated Development Environment)
  • C003 : Contains all the components of C001 and a PIC16 C language programming book using the Hi-Tech C compiler (All examples will work with the student version of the compiler that can be downloaded freely from Microchip)
  • C004: Contains all the components of C002 and a PIC16 C language programming course module using the Microchip C compiler for the PIC18 (All examples will work with the student version of the compiler that can be downloaded freely from Microchip)
  • D001: Contains a collection of electronics components that extend those used in the B002, an Arduino Nano board and an Arduino programming book
  • D003: Contains a collection of electronics components that extend those used in the B002, a TinCan Tools "Hammer" board running embedded Linux and an introduction to Embedded Linux programming book
  • The beginners kit (A001) contains a toy car, a handbook of exercises, a breadboard and a collection of electronics components for constructing simple electronic circuits, and simple applications based on logic ICs (Integrated Circuits).
No programming or soldering is required, and connections to motors and other components are via the breadboard.
  • The next level kit (A002) contains all the components of the A001 kit and in addtion has one more bread board , more electronic components (including and OR gates) and further experiments that included sound generation, IR remote control, and IR alarm experiments.
  • The kits at the next two levels include 8 bit microcontrollers. These come already pre-programmed, however, by purchasing a suitable programmer and code development tools they can be programmed directly. Purchasing a programmed and code development environment makes it possible for teachers to develop more extended exercises, and also to teach the elements of embedded systems programming.
Kit B001 contains all the components of kit A002, and, in addition contains either an Atmel AT89C2051 microcontroller, or a PIC 16F628A. Teaching notes describe the code that has been programmed into the microcontrollers in both pseudocode and in BASIC.
  • Kit B002 contains all the components of kit B001 and, in addition contains extra electronic components, a stepper motor, and a handbook of more advanced exercises and experiments, which cover topics such as
    • relays and ladder logic diagrams
    • logic circuits and their uses
    • flip flops, timers and counters
    • sensors and op amps
    • Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and motor speed control
    • Basic driving of stepper motors
